A Wall You Can Get Into

Engaging Guests In Self-Transformation

Marriott Hotels introduced a bold new concept in hospitality with the launch of its Art of Innovation Wall at its “Live Beta” property in Charlotte NC last year. The tech-driven experience engages guests in the exploration of four stages of a traveler’s creative process: Relaxation, Inspiration, Change and Accomplishment. The installation has already engaged the imagination of more than 2000 people in the US, London and Frankfurt, and is expected to inspire thousands more as it continues its global journey this year.

Marriott believes in the power of travel and how it expands the mind and inspires better thinking. To accomplish its goal of innovating the guest experience with an eye on design and technology, Marriott Hotels partnered with IMG Live, a leading experiential marketing agency that, with WME l IMG and Fusion Marketing, dedicated a team of designers and developers to use their knowledge and skills involving many technologies, including fluid dynamics simulation to engineer and deliver a truly innovative system.

One of Marriott Hotels’ key goals is to foster the creativity and ingenuity of all its guests. Furthering this vision, four zones of the wall were designed and engineered using an array of AV and lighting technologies, as well as numerous tech sensors, to trigger surprising, multi-sensorial experiences.

The wall, measuring 21x6x9 feet (length, depth, height) incorporates a 43-inch and a 75-inch 4K, ultra-slim commercial LG LCD flatpanel, four ViewSonic short-throw projectors, four Dakota Audio full-range mini-speaker arrays, one Raspberry Pi 3 and eight custom media players. The developers created three software applications in the Unity engine, one each for Zones 2, 3 and 4, to run the media visuals. They built the media visuals and controls using three powerful ASUS desktop computers.

According to Marriott Hotels, the activation elements include heartbeat color display in the Relaxation Zone, posing and animation response in the Inspiration Zone, “ink-in-water” touch projection in the Change Zone, and geometric sound and light tracing in the Accomplishment Zone.

IMG Live and Fusion Marketing shared the following details about the concept and workings of each zone, as well as the challenges in each area.

The printed sign on Zone 1 reads: “An inventive mind begins with a relaxed mind. Sit down. Place your hand on the sensor. The color experience will sync with your heartbeat as it rises or falls. Watch the colors change as you journey through a personalized moment of relaxation.”
